A new neuroprosthetic device that translates his brain waves into full sentences now allows a man paralysed by a stroke to "speak". The device detects his intention by means of an electrode in his brain's speech centre. The signals are interpreted by a computer. He can directly send 50 common words, and spell out over 1000 words. In another year, they hope to get it up to 9000, which is what most people use in a year. The device can give about 7 words a minute, as of now. That's faster than what he could type out on a screen with a pen fixed to his forehead.
Now this is useful technology!
