Bad Astronomy shows how to check if something is a hoax or not. If you see the picture below in your stream or in a mail, it’s a hoax. The picture purports to be that of an alignment of planets on top of three famous Egyptian pyramids, that is apparently rare and a once-in-over-2700 years event due on Dec 3, 2012.

1. To start with, if the event has not yet happened, it’s not a photo. At best, an artist’s conception.

2. Check if there really is a set of planetary alignments on that date. Use any good astronomical simulation software for this. So, yes, there are three planets fairly close together then.

3. The software will show you how these will appear in Egypt, near the pyramids. Since the ecliptic is highly tilted that close to the equator, no, they won’t show like that.

4. Check where in the sky the planets will appear relative to the pyramids. Oops, they will appear at the back of anyone looking out at the pyramids from where the pyramid picture was taken.

5. In general, check if such alignments are really rare. Nope, they are fairly common. These three planets aligned up nicely only 7 years ago. That’s not even 2700 days.
